Before arriving to Mallorca

  • Airport: Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI) offers direct connections to most European cities and direct flights from NYC for U.S. travelers.

  • Travel Insurance: Essential for peace of mind; choose one covering cycling activities.

  • Visa Requirements: Check the Spanish Government’s tourist visa page for the latest information.

Best months for cycling in Mallorca

Mallorca offers cycling opportunities year-round, with great weather for cycling from March to June and September to October. During these months, temperatures are mild, and the roads are less crowded, making it ideal for cycling.

However, in the summer months (July and August), the island can get very hot and is often crowded with tourists. If you’re cycling during this time, we recommend starting your ride early at sunrise to avoid the heat and make the most of cooler temperatures.

If you're looking for a more premium experience, it’s best to avoid the peak summer months, as the intense heat and heavy tourist traffic can impact your cycling experience. Additionally, watch out for the wind, especially in February and November, which can affect your rides.

Road conditions and safety tips

Mallorca’s roads are among the best for cycling, with many resurfaced annually. However, here are some valuable tips:

  1. Bike security: While bike theft is rare, in busier areas like Palma, Alcúdia, or Inca, keep your bike in sight if you don’t have a lock.

  2. Repair kit essentials: Always carry a repair kit when cycling in the Tramuntana region. A flat tire there could mean a long, challenging return.

  3. Hydration and snacks: The island’s heat and climbs demand proper nutrition and hydration.

  4. Descending safety: Take extra care on narrow roads like Sa Marina or steep descents on Sa Calobra.

  5. Buses and traffic: Expect heavier traffic near Sa Calobra and other tourist hotspots during peak times.

Top 5 climbs for cyclists

Mallorca is famed for its breathtaking climbs that challenge and inspire. Here are the top five you can’t miss:

1 Sa Calobra (Coll dels Reis)

From June 1st to September 30th, the second part of the road is closed to regular traffic, making it a cyclist’s dream. However, you’ll need to be mindful of the occasional fast-moving buses on this stretch.
