Quick answer
- Self-guided suits confident, experienced riders: you get the same hotels, bikes, GPX routes, luggage transfers and emergency assistance, and ride on your own clock.
- Guided pays off on the long Tramuntana days — e.g. the 95 km, 2,148 m North Tramuntana crossing on our Signature tour — and for mixed-level groups.
- Cost: a guided day costs €280 (short ride), €310 (medium) or €340 (long), on top of the tour price (from €950 to €5,850 per person).
- Our usual recommendation: book a guide for 1–2 key days and ride the recovery and coastal days self-guided.
- All six public Medfeel cycling tours in Mallorca offer all three formats: guided, self-guided or a mix.
What is the difference between guided and self-guided cycling in Mallorca?
On a guided trip, a Medfeel guide rides alongside you, sets the pace, briefs you on the day's hazards and adapts the route to wind, heat or traffic. On a self-guided trip, the same route arrives as a GPX file and you ride it alone or with your group, with our team a phone call away. The hotels, bikes and logistics are identical.
That last point is what most comparisons get wrong. "Self-guided" is often sold as the budget version of a tour — cheaper hotels, a hired bike you collect yourself, a PDF of directions. On a Medfeel trip the format only changes who is next to you on the road. Everything else on the inclusions list stays the same, whichever you pick.

What does a self-guided Mallorca cycling tour include?
A self-guided Medfeel tour includes all hotel nights with breakfast, a high-end Trek road bike or e-bike delivered to your first hotel, helmet, pedals and device mount, daily bike insurance, GPX files for every route, energy bars, gels and salts, luggage transfers between hotels, airport transfers, an onboarding session, emergency and rescue assistance and a dedicated Medfeel travel agent.
Flights, travel insurance, and food and drink beyond breakfast are not included in either format. The onboarding session matters more for self-guided riders than for anyone else: it's where we load and check your routes, go through the descents worth respecting, and agree how you'll reach us if something goes wrong on a mountain road with patchy coverage.
Self-guided does not mean unsupported. One review from April 2026 captures it better than we can: "We had a bike breakdown and were quickly met with a new bike to continue our journey" (Charles Brackett, United States). That is the support model — you ride alone, but you aren't alone with the problem.
When is a guide worth paying for in Mallorca?
A guide is worth it on days that are long, technical, or decided by the weather — in Mallorca that means the Serra de Tramuntana. Our guides earn their fee most on the big crossing days and the descents into Sa Calobra or off Puig Major, and least on short valley or coastal loops a GPX file handles perfectly well.
Specifically, a guide changes the day when:
- The day is long and committing. Once you are deep in the Tramuntana, the roads between villages are few and there's no quick way out.
- The weather decides the route. Wind direction and mountain cloud can turn the right plan into the wrong one by mid-morning. A guide swaps sides of the island on the spot; a GPX file can't.
- Descents are technical. Hairpins, shaded corners and coach traffic in spring make the Tramuntana descents the riskiest part of any Mallorca trip.
- Your group has mixed levels. A guide manages regroup points so nobody rides alone for two hours or waits at the top for forty minutes.
- You want the island, not just the ride. The coffee stop, the village, the viewpoint that's worth the 2 km detour — that is the "local" part of local knowledge.
Where does a guide earn its fee? A day-by-day example
The easiest way to decide is day by day. Here is the Signature Mallorca Bike Tour — 7 days, 5 riding days, 430 km and 4,610 m of climbing, rated Intermediate — with our honest view of where a guide adds most. Distances and elevation come straight from the tour itinerary.
| Day | Route | Distance / climbing | Guide value | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Ride to Cap de Formentor | 49 km / 1,108 m | Medium | Out-and-back road; traffic and access rules on the Formentor road vary by year, so timing matters |
| 3 | North Tramuntana crossing (Sa Calobra optional, Coll de Sa Batalla) | 95 km / 2,148 m | High | The longest, most committing day; you move hotels, so there's no turning back to base |
| 4 | Sóller valley recovery ride (Fornalutx, Biniaraix) | 30 km / 320 m | Low | Short loop from Port de Sóller; perfect for self-guided |
| 5 | Deià & Valldemossa | 55 km / 1,188 m | Medium | Coastal road with busy village stretches; a guide helps with stops and timing |
| 6 | Western coast: Estellencs, Banyalbufar, Andratx | 66 km / 1,341 m | Medium–High | Exposed coast road with repeated climbs late in the week |
Day 3 is the clearest case. It's the queen stage of the week, you finish in a different hotel (Hotel Espléndido in Port de Sóller), and it includes the option of dropping to Sa Calobra. Day 4, by contrast, is 30 km through orange groves in the Sóller valley — a GPX file and a good café list are all you need.
Should you ride Sa Calobra self-guided?
Experienced riders can ride Sa Calobra self-guided, but it is the one climb where we most often recommend a guide. The road is a dead end: whatever you descend, you have to climb back — the Coll des Reis is 9.5 km at 7.2% average with 660 m of elevation — unless a pickup has been arranged in advance.
The descent itself is the bigger issue. It is tight, busy with coaches and cars in high season, and easy to misjudge on tired legs. A guide also knows when to skip it: on our Signature itinerary Sa Calobra is optional on day 3 precisely because some days the right answer is to keep the legs for the rest of the crossing. If you go, start early, carry food for the climb back, and tell someone your plan.
Two more Tramuntana facts self-guided riders should know. The summit area of Puig Major is a military zone, so the road goes through the tunnel rather than to the peak. And mountain weather changes quickly — a warm morning on the coast can turn cold and windy at the top of Coll de Sa Batalla (7.9 km at 5.0%), so a windproof layer lives in every jersey pocket regardless of the forecast.
Who is self-guided cycling in Mallorca best for?
Self-guided is best for experienced riders who are comfortable following a GPX file on mountain roads, have ridden long descents before, and value freedom over company: their own start time, their own coffee stops, their own pace. It's also a good fit for couples or friends of a similar level who enjoy working out the day together.
It is not the right choice if this is your first trip with real mountains, if your group has a wide spread of fitness, if you're anxious on descents, or if you're travelling in winter, when shorter days and colder summits make weather calls more important. Be honest with yourself here: the most common self-guided regret we hear isn't "it was too hard" — it's "we spent the best day of the trip looking at a screen".
Who is a guided cycling tour in Mallorca best for?
A guided tour is best for first-time visitors to the Tramuntana, mixed-level groups, riders who want to push hard without managing navigation, and anyone who wants to understand the island rather than just ride across it. It also suits riders on a tight schedule: with a guide, a bad-weather day becomes a different good day instead of a lost one.
Guided doesn't mean slow, and it doesn't mean a group of strangers: a Medfeel guide rides with your party, at your pace. The reviews that mention guiding are rarely about navigation. "Co founders Adrian and Jaume brought the island to life for us, from exceptional route design to exquisite accommodations to the kind of local coffee stops you would never find on your own," wrote Bernie Kollman from Canada in April 2026 — and that last phrase is the real argument for a guide.
Can you mix guided and self-guided days?
Yes, and it's the format we recommend most. Every public Medfeel cycling tour in Mallorca can be booked guided, self-guided or as a mix, and many guests ride guided on the harder days and self-guided on the easier ones. You choose the guided days when you book, and we build the route plan around them.
On the Signature tour, a typical mix is a guide on day 3 (the North Tramuntana crossing) and day 6 (the western coast), with Formentor, the Sóller valley and Deià–Valldemossa ridden on your own. On the shorter itineraries the logic is the same: guide the mountain day, self-guide the rest.
| Tour | Days / riding days | Distance / climbing | Level | Our suggested guided day(s) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Weekend Cycling Escape — from €950 | 3 / 2 | 130 km / 1,850 m | Intermediate | Day 2: Sa Batalla Tramuntana loop (83 km, 2,297 m) |
| Classic Mallorca Bike Short Tour — from €1,250 | 5 / 3 | 330 km / 3,290 m | Intermediate | Day 3: Tramuntana queen stage to Port de Sóller (92 km, 2,180 m) |
| Signature Mallorca Bike Tour — from €2,320 | 7 / 5 | 430 km / 4,610 m | Intermediate | Days 3 and 6 |
| Easygoing E-Bike Tour — from €1,880 | 7 / 5 | 260 km / 1,450 m | Easy cycling | Day 5: across the heart of the Tramuntana (59 km, 1,080 m) |
| Tramuntana Luxury Ride — from €4,850 | 7 / 5 | 455 km / 4,670 m | Intermediate | Day 3: crossing the Tramuntana (90 km, 2,180 m) |
| Epic Island Cycling Loop — from €5,850 | 8 / 6 | 375 km / 6,000 m | Experienced | Day 5: Tramuntana queen stage (78 km, 2,050 m) |
How much does a cycling guide cost in Mallorca?
With Medfeel, a guided day costs €280 for a short ride, €310 for a medium ride and €340 for a long ride. It's priced on top of the tour itself, which starts from €950 per person for the 3-day Weekend Cycling Escape and goes up to €5,850 per person for the 8-day Epic Island Cycling Loop. Your quote shows the exact figure for your group and dates.
The arithmetic usually settles the debate. Guiding one or two key days adds a few hundred euros to a trip that already costs several thousand, and it covers the days where things are most likely to go wrong — or most likely to be the highlight. Guiding every day of a 7-day trip costs more, and on the short recovery loops you're mostly paying for company.
If you're weighing up whether to travel alone with your own group or join scheduled dates, that's a separate decision covered in our guide to designing a private cycling tour in Mallorca.
Our take: which should you choose?
For most riders, the best answer in Mallorca is a mix: a guide on the one or two long Tramuntana days, self-guided everywhere else. Go fully self-guided only if you are experienced on mountain descents and comfortable changing plans yourself; go fully guided if it is your first mountain trip or your group levels differ a lot. By rider type:
- First time in Mallorca, intermediate level: mix — guide the Tramuntana day(s), self-guide the rest.
- Experienced rider, been to Mallorca before: self-guided, plus a guided day if you want Sa Calobra or Puig Major in bad-weather season.
- Couple or friends of different levels: guided on the long days, with e-bikes for whoever wants them; self-guided on the short ones.
- Winter trip (November–February): lean guided — shorter days and colder summits make daily route calls more important.
- Strong rider chasing the big climbs: guided on the climbing days for the route calls, self-guided otherwise.

Frequently asked questions
Is self-guided cycling in Mallorca safe?
For riders comfortable in traffic and on long descents, yes. Mallorca's main cycling roads see heavy bike traffic from autumn to spring and drivers are used to riders, and a self-guided Medfeel trip includes GPX files that flag technical descents and busy sections, helmets, daily bike insurance and emergency and rescue assistance. What it can't give you is someone reading the road for you in real time — on the Tramuntana descents that matters most.
Do I need to speak Spanish to ride self-guided?
No. Hotels, cafés and bike support on Mallorca's main cycling routes work comfortably in English, and your route is on a GPX file rather than road signs. The local language is Catalan (Mallorquí) alongside Spanish, which mainly shows up on village names and signposts, so it helps to know the village names on your route rather than the language.
What GPS device do I need for a self-guided trip?
Any GPS bike computer or phone app that can load GPX files will do — a Garmin, Wahoo, Hammerhead or a phone on a handlebar mount. Medfeel sends GPX files for every route and includes a device mount with the bike. Load the files and do a test ride before day one, and carry a power bank on the long days: a dead screen is the most common self-guided problem we see.
Can I switch from self-guided to guided once I'm on the island?
Often, yes, but don't count on it in peak weeks. Guide days are scheduled around the guides' existing bookings, so a request made the evening before in April or October is harder to fill than one made when you book. If you think you might want a guide for the big Tramuntana day, book that one day upfront — it's easier to drop than to add.
Can one person ride guided while their partner rides self-guided?
Yes — guiding is set per day and per rider plan, so a group can split: the stronger rider goes with a guide on a longer route while a partner follows a shorter GPX loop, and you meet at the hotel or a lunch stop. On an e-bike, a partner can often ride the same guided route instead; tell us your levels and we'll suggest which works better.
Are guided cycling tours in Mallorca only for slow or beginner riders?
No. A guide adjusts to the rider, not the other way round: for fit riders the value is the route knowledge — the right side of the island for the day's wind, the café that's actually open, the line through a descent — rather than slowing down. Several of our most experienced guests book a guide specifically for their hardest days.
